Dutch standout and Florida All-American Alida van Daalen, the only female thrower in European Athletics U23 Championships history to sweep the shot put and discus throw gold medals in the same year July 13-16 in Espoo, Finland, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Aug. 26 in the shot put in her debut at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. In her final tuneup before Worlds, the 21-year-old van Daalen produced a mark of 57-11 (17.65m) in the shot put and a throw of 190-4 (58.02m) in the discus Aug. 12 at the BMW Louyet Meeting in Belgium. She is scheduled to compete along with NCAA Division 1 champion and Oregon All-American Jorinde van Klinken, along with adidas professional athlete Jessica Schilder, in the shot put in Budapest, after placing in the top three in both events July 28-29 at the Dutch Championships in Breda. There will be a reunion of several Florida female athletes in Hungary, along with adidas professional athlete Anna Hall and New Balance distance runner Cory McGee, as well as Gators' All-American and Division 1 champions Jasmine Moore and Talitha Diggs competing for the United States, plus male competitors Grant Holloway, Marquis Dendy, Will Claye and Ryan Willie. She expresses gratitude for Florida throws coach Eric Werskey, as well as the Gators' coaching and support staff, for their support during the summer. Werskey joined van Daalen in Finland at the European U23 Championships, where she prevailed with performances of 60-1.25 (18.32m) in the shot put and 186-3 (56.77m) in the discus. She examines her journey from capturing a silver medal in the discus and bronze in the shot put in 2018 at the European U18 Championships in Gyor and how it will be a full circle moment for her to return to Hungary to compete in her first World Athletics Championships just five years later. After capturing medals in the European U18, European U20 and European U23 Championships, van Daalen explains her primary goal in Budapest is to make the final and hopefully produce a personal-best effort. She examines how significant the experience in Hungary will be in preparation for qualifying in both the discus and shot put for the 2024 Paris Olympics, and how motivated van Daalen is to surpass the 60-meter mark following her personal-best 196-9 (59.96m) to take third June 10 at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas.
