Talitha Diggs, the youngest female athlete in American history to run under 50 seconds in the 400 meters at age 19 along with one of only two women to capture NCAA Division 1 indoor and outdoor titles as well as the USATF Outdoor Championship in the same year joining Maicel Malone-Wallace of Arizona State in 1990, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Diggs, who ranks No. 4 in the world this year and ranks fifth all-time among collegiate competitors with her 49.99 performance June 11 at the NCAA Division 1 final, is scheduled to race July 17 in the opening round of the 400, along with contributing to the 4x400 relay for the United States, with the championship held July 24. She reflects on her first memories of watching family members compete at Hayward Field at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials and how meaningful it was to take a victory lap June 25 in the stadium with her mother and father, along with many relatives in attendance, after winning the national title in 50.22. Her mother Joetta Clark Diggs made her World Championships debut in Rome in 1987, in addition to competing in four Olympics. Diggs explains the benefits of racing against Texas A&M standout Charokee Young, representing Jamaica, as well as U.S. national team member Britton Wilson of Arkansas during Southeastern Conference meets, plus another U.S. national team athlete in Kennedy Simon of Texas at the NCAA Division 1 Championships. She also looks forward to potential opportunities to race against Tokyo silver medalist Marileidy Paulino from the Dominican Republic, along with two-time Olympic gold medalist and World Championships silver medalist Shaunae Miler-Uibo of the Bahamas. Diggs examines how the training program at Florida under the guidance of coach Mike Holloway has allowed her to remain healthy and consistent throughout the seven-month season, in addition to giving her optimism that she can run even faster in her debut at a global championship meet. She also analyzes her improvements in race tactics and strategy after placing second at the Division 1 outdoor final, third at the NCAA indoor championship and reaching the semifinals of the U.S. Olympic Trials last year. Diggs shares how instrumental her faith has been throughout her career, in addition to how meaningful it is to have nine Florida athletes past and present on the U.S. team for Worlds competing at Hayward Field.
