Cory McGee, a New Balance professional athlete along with an Olympic finalist in the 1,500 meters and Florida graduate, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in her second outdoor World Championships and third overall in her career, including the World Indoor meet in 2016 in Portland. McGee, 30, is one of seven female athletes on the U.S. roster to compete at both the global championship in Portland, along with the event July 15-24 at Hayward Field in Eugene. She explains the significance of having four athletes from her Team Boss training group competing at the World Championships, including American teammates Emma Coburn and Emma Bates, along with South African standout Dominique Scott. McGee also explains her pride for having nine Florida competitors past and present represented on the U.S. roster, in addition to watching the Gators capture both the NCAA Division 1 women's indoor and outdoor team titles, the latter being the first in program history. She reflects on her first World Championships experience in Moscow in 2013, along with competing last year in Tokyo, and expresses gratitude for having the opportunity to compete again in front of family and friends July 15 in the 1,500 qualifying round at Hayward Field. McGee revisits the emotions of racing in the Olympic final after being tripped in the semifinals that resulted in a fall and required an appeal for her to advance. She examines how the experience affected her passion for racing during the indoor season, before she began focusing on her goal of qualifying for the World Championships during the spring. McGee analyzes running a personal-best 4:00.34 in May at the Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field and shares her ambitions for producing a sub-4 performance and reaching the World final to have an opportunity to compete once more against global elite. McGee also reminisces about all the American 1,500-meter athletes she has been teammates with during her international experiences in the past decade and speaks about her longevity in the event, especially being joined this year by U.S. champion and first-time qualifier Sinclaire of Johnson of Nike and Union Athletics Club along with Olympic teammate Elle St. Pierre.
